Comprehensive Insights into Sports Injuries

Sulis Hospital Bath hosts an educational event for General Practitioners (GPs) providing an update on sports injury assessment skills and the latest treatment techniques.

This educational event, held on Thursday, 12th September attracted GPs from the surrounding area, creating a platform for professional growth.

The event was organised in conjunction with the educational charity BGPERT.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Specialist Knee Surgeon Mr Neil Bradbury is a knee specialist and nationally acclaimed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Sulis Hospital. His aim is to get patients with a sporting injury or arthritis back to full function as quickly and simply as possible.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon & Shoulder Specialist Mr Andrew Chambler is a shoulder specialist surgeon at Sulis Hospital. He leads the Upper Limb unit and sees patients from the south west of England as well as internationally.

These experts provided training and updates on:

Knee sports injuries: Mr Bradbury provided updates on how to identify conditions such as Patellar Subluxation / Dislocation, Patella / quads tendon ruptures, Collateral Ligament, and Cruciate ligament.

Shoulder injuries in sports: Mr Chambler discussed GHJ Dislocations - Stabilisations, ACJ Disruptions - Reconstructions, Tendinopathies, Rotator Cuff Tears - Standard and Biological repair.

The session covered topics, from common issues like rotator cuff tears to the latest advancements in biological treatments for both the shoulder and knee. Attendees gained valuable insights into the diagnosis, treatment, and management of sports-related injuries, enhancing their ability to provide the best care for their patients.

The presentations were well-received, offering practical advice and highlighting cutting-edge techniques that are transforming the field of orthopaedics. The evening was informative and helpful, leaving GPs better equipped to handle the complexities of sports injuries in their practice.

The Sports Medicine service is intended to detect sports injuries at the earliest possible stage when it is curable with relatively minor surgery.

The primary learning objectives were to enhance knowledge in assessing sports and shoulder conditions and determining when to refer patients for specialist care. The event also covered the latest treatment techniques and provided tips, ensuring that attendees gained up-to-date knowledge to offer the best care for their patients.
