Mr Mike Williamson
Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon
Mike Williamson is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Sulis Hospital Bath as well as Consultant Surgeon at the Royal United Hospital, Bath. He is also a Clinical Teacher and trainer with the University of Bristol Medical Academy.
Having graduated from the University of Wales (Cardiff) with intercalated BSc (Hons) in Physiology, Mike carried out his Junior Surgical Training in South Wales before qualifying as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of London. He then took up a research post, studying the functional results of surgery for ulcerative colitis and rectal cancer at the General Infirmary in Leeds, which led to the award of an MD.
Mike continued his senior surgical training on the West Yorkshire SpR Rotation, achieving Fellow of the Joint UK Colleges of Surgeons (Gen) and Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in 1997, before spending a colorectal fellowship year in Concord Hospital, Sydney.
Mike returned to Yorkshire in 1998 to complete his training and was appointed as Consultant General Surgeon specialising in colorectal disease in Bath a year later. Mike has always been interested in postgraduate medical education and has held a number of high-profile positions in the postgraduate education department. Mike has been a lead clinician for colorectal cancer at both hospital and regional level. As well as his interest in colorectal disease, Mike specialises in the management of groin hernias, both keyhole and open approach, including under general and local anaesthetic. He is a member of the British Hernia Society.
