Ankle pain

Ankle pain is any kind of pain or discomfort in and around the ankle joint.

There can be many reasons for ankle pain. The most common causes include acute or overuse with injuries and tendinopathies as well as a number of other medical conditions which commonly include arthritis and normal wear and tear. Ankle injuries and pain are very common and can present with stiffness, swelling, reduced range of movements in the ankle joints and difficulty walking.

The cause of ankle pains can often be diagnosed by understanding the history of the injuries, symptoms and a comprehensive examination by your doctor or physiotherapist.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to have a biomechanical evaluation of foot mechanics. Further investigations such as X-rays, diagnostic ultrasound or MRI scans may be necessary.

Treatments for ankle pain

The treatment for ankle pain is based on the cause and an accurate diagnosis. Most ankle pains get better with treatments such as rest, ice, compression, elevation, supportive footwear and over-the-counter pain medications such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Physiotherapy is the key treatment via a customized rehabilitation and exercise program to help improve flexibility and strengthening of the muscles that support the ankle joints.

After a biomechanical evaluation, orthotics such as splints and braces or shoe insoles may be advised to correct any contributing biomechanical abnormalities.

Injections such as steroids may be recommended using ultrasound or X-ray guidance.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to have surgical intervention such as an ankle arthroscopy, a type of keyhole surgery used for diagnosing or repairing ankle joint problems.

Ankle pain can be frustrating so it's important to know that help is available.
