What does General Surgery include?
General Surgery is a broad surgical specialty that includes issues in the abdomen, gastrointestinal tract, breast and the endocrine and vascular systems.
At Sulis Hospital General Surgery Unit, we treat abdominal pain, weight concerns, thyroid dysfunction and peripheral vascular disease. We also see patients for the following procedures:
Breast surgery: Including cosmetic breast surgery and reconstructive surgery following breast cancer.
Gastroenterological surgery: This includes operations to achieve weight loss, such as surgery to restrict the amount of food ingested or to reduce the number of nutrients gained from food.
Vascular procedures: Surgical procedures include diabetic foot surgery, varicose vein treatment and stroke prevention surgery.
General surgery: Including hernia repair surgery and gallbladder removal. We regularly see and treat patients who require the following:
• Removal of haemorrhoids
• Treatment for pelvic floor disorder
• Gallbladder removal
• Anti-reflux surgery
• Treatment for rectal bleeding
• Hernia surgery
Our specialist team aims to provide you with a better understanding of your condition and the options for managing it. We also benefit from close links with other departments, such as endocrinology, ensuring we can deliver the full breadth of medical expertise you require.
Move forward faster
If an issue is causing you discomfort or pain, you will want to be seen by a surgical consultant as quickly as possible. By choosing Sulis Hospital for your private healthcare, you can benefit from timely access to consultant appointments and diagnostic scans. We aim to offer treatment within two weeks of your diagnosis.
State-of-the-art facilities
We have invested in advanced diagnostic technologies and equipped our operating theatres with the latest surgical technology to support the skills of our general surgeons. In addition, there is a modern, dedicated unit for those patients being treated on a day case basis.
Safe hospital environment
Our team takes infection control very seriously. The General Surgery Unit upholds the highest standard of cleanliness, including a rigorous cleaning regime and attention to detail to prevent surgical infections. All equipment is thoroughly sanitised, and we perform regular screenings to protect you from COVID-19 and other infections during your time with us.
Post-operative care
You will always receive the highest quality surgical treatment possible, as well as field-leading support and care following your operation. Our wider allied health team includes specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and dieticians who are able to offer significant support following surgery.
Your first appointment at Sulis Hospital is an opportunity to discuss your symptoms with an expert consultant. They will want to know about your previous medical history as well as your current concerns.
They’ll welcome you into a modern and comfortable consultation room for a detailed exploration of your symptoms. It is likely that they will perform a physical examination and may wish to carry out additional diagnostic tests, such as an MRI, blood test, CT scan or X-Ray. Everything will be thoroughly explained to you beforehand so that you know why a test has been recommended and how it will be carried out.
Waiting for results can lead to additional worry, discomfort and uncertainty. That’s why we aim to provide all patients with a timely diagnosis and fast access to treatment.
We know how important a clear and timely diagnosis is for our patients. Our clinical radiologists work closely with radiographers and consultants to provide a high-quality scanning service, which includes CT scans, MRI, X-Rays and ultrasound scans.
We will always aim to schedule your tests in as few visits as possible, minimising the number of times you need to visit the hospital. You can find out more about our Advanced Imaging Unit here.
If it’s determined that surgery is the best route forward, your consultant will make sure you have all the information you need to take the next step for your health.
We’ll make sure you’re fully informed about what will happen during surgery and are aware of all the risks. We’ll also make sure you know what to expect after the operation, such as how long it might take to recover and how much time you will need to spend recuperating to allow your body to heal.
Exceptional patient care at Sulis Hospital General Surgery Unit
We aim to offer an excellent patient experience, which begins from the moment you arrive at our award-winning, contemporary hospital.
Your initial consultation and any further appointments will take place in one of our comfortable and modern consultation rooms, where we have a range of diagnostic equipment for same-day screenings.
Should you need to stay with us after surgery, you’ll be welcomed into a comfortable, private room with countryside views, with delicious meals cooked and prepared on-site and menus designed to fuel your recovery.
