Your consultation and treatment will be carried out by the specialist consultant urologist at Sulis Hospital. All our staff are experts in urinary tract problems and are dedicated to getting you treated and fully recovered quickly and safely.
We know that you’d prefer not to need any treatment for your urinary tract, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, urethra, or male reproductive organs.
When you book an appointment at Sulis Hospital you’ll be seen by one of our friendly consultants who specialises in urological problems.
All of them are recognised leaders in their field and have many years of experience treating issues of the urinary tract, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs.
They’ll have a very detailed chat with you about your symptoms, your concerns, and your previous medical history to get a thorough understanding of things.
You may be asked to complete a questionnaire about urinary symptoms (this is known as the International Prostate Symptom Score).
Depending on the symptoms you’re experiencing, they may want to carry out some specialised tests to help them assess things more accurately (don’t worry, they’ll explain any examination they need to do. You’ll always know what’s being done and why it’s being done).
At Sulis Hospital we have a wide range of state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to ensure you’ll receive a fast and accurate diagnosis.
Some of the tests that your consultant may want you to have include:
- a blood test: to check if there are any signs of inflammation or infection that may be causing your symptoms
- an ultrasound scan of your bladder or kidneys: this can help assess the size, location, and shape of them, as well as detect abnormalities
- flow rate: this measures the speed of your urinary flow, and can help assess bladder function
Not all of these additional tests will necessarily be required, and the consultant may want you to have additional tests that aren’t listed above. Again, these will all be thoroughly explained to you beforehand so that you know how the tests will be carried out and why they’re being done.
You’ll be pleased to know that we believe in giving you a quick, accurate diagnosis. After all, why should you have to wait for a fortnight (or longer) for your results to come back? A longer wait for results means additional worry, discomfort and uncertainty that you just don’t need.
It should be noted that after this initial meeting the consultant may decide that surgery isn’t needed and that treatment can be provided by some other means (for example medication).
If it’s determined that surgery is in fact required, the consultant will talk you through the process thoroughly and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
The Sulis Hospital has state-of-the-art operating theatres equipped with the latest surgical technology to support the skills of our urologists. There is also a modern, dedicated daycare unit with the latest endoscopic equipment to investigate and treat urinary problems.
Sulis Hospital offers exceptional surgical care and a positive experience throughout your patient journey. The bedrooms, consultation rooms and daycare unit are clean, airy and comfortable. The chef cooks up a variety of delicious meals and snacks to fuel your recovery.
Nothing is too much effort. The ward and endoscopy staff have the time to answer your questions, provide sensitive support and offer reassurance and a friendly smile.
The urology team takes infection protection seriously. With rigorous cleanliness and attention to detail, we work to prevent surgical infections and keep you safe.
All urology patients are screened before surgery and given antibiotics to prevent urinary infections. Antibiotic usage is very strictly monitored. The equipment is thoroughly sanitised, and we perform regular swabs and screening to ensure your security from COVID and other infections.
The Urology Unit is run by an experienced and skilled multidisciplinary team. The consultants, diagnostic and imaging professionals, specialist nurses and ward and theatre staff work together to treat your condition and support your healthy recovery.
